History
The story of Carrot is a peculiar one. Born to parents he would never meet, he was raised by dwarves in Anvilmar. After a tragic attack by bandits in the area, Carrot's biological parents were murdered. The dwarves drove the bandits off, but no one was left alive except for a small baby crying in a cradle.
They never told him he wasn't a dwarf. He knew he was a bit different, especially during his teenage years, when he grew to be two meters tall (6'6"). Having worked in the mines all his life, he also grew up to be exceptionally muscular. He was raised by one of the best miners in the region, a dwarf commonly known as the King of the Mines, as his friends liked to call him. His father taught him the ways of dwarven culture: to be fair, to be honest, and to believe that every problem could be solved with a good talk, with violence being a last resort.
One day, his father called him in for what he referred to as "the talk."
"You know, my son, I think it is time for you to go out and explore the world. It is time to find those who are... you know... more like you."
"But I want to stay here! I really like Minty, the daughter of our neighbors, and I don't want to leave her!"
"I know, I know... That's exactly why we're having this conversation, my son. Her parents came to talk to me and... well, you're different."
"What do you mean, I'm different, Father?"
"I don't know if you've noticed, Carrot, my son, but you're... very tall. You... you're not really a dwarf. I believe you're a human."
"What? Are you telling me I'm adopted, Father?"
"Listen. Perhaps there's a reason you're growing so much. Perhaps the mines will be too small for you. And perhaps going out and exploring the world would do you good. That's why I've written a letter to the King of Stormwind. I'm hoping he'll find you a fine job, and perhaps you'll find your place in the world, lad."
"I understand. If that's your wish, I'll do it with all my heart, Father."
As he prepared to leave home, Carrot hugged his parents one last time before setting off for the great city of Stormwind. On his way out of the village, he waved to the dwarven girl named Minty. She waved back with a nervous smile on her face.
And so, Carrot walked from Anvilmar to the great city of Ironforge, where he took the Deeprun Tram to Stormwind.
He had never seen so many different people in his life. He arrived in the Dwarven District, and although it felt somewhat familiar, it was very different from the place where he had grown up. The city was different. The people were different. Even the dwarves seemed different, though he couldn't quite put his finger on why.
As he passed a tavern, he heard a great deal of noise coming from inside.
When he stepped through the door, he found a room full of dwarves engaged in a rather enthusiastic brawl. Beer mugs were flying, tables were being overturned, and an axe came hurtling in his direction. He barely had time to duck before it struck the door behind him.
The dwarves were noisy, drunk, and generally disagreeable.
"HEY!" Carrot shouted.
"What are you all doing?!"
The dwarves paused their brawl and turned to look at him. One was holding another by the neck, his fist raised and ready to strike. Another had stopped mid-swing, clutching a mug from which beer was steadily spilling onto the floor.
"Are you not ashamed of yourselves? What do you think your parents would say if they saw you like this? You! Yes, you with the mug. What would your dear old mom think if she heard that her beloved son was fighting while so far from home? And you! When was the last time you wrote to your poor old parents, who think the world of you, back in cold Dun Morogh? Do you think they'd be pleased with your behavior? All of you are going to stop this, and stop it now. This is not how you were raised!"
The dwarves looked at one another.
Then, one by one, they lowered their fists.
A few wiped tears from their eyes. One muttered something about having let his mother down. Another promised to write home as soon as he could find a quill. Soon, the tavern was empty, save for the broken furniture, the spilled beer, and the axe embedded in the door.
Carrot watched them leave, satisfied that the matter had been settled peacefully.
He was beginning to suspect that city life was going to take some getting used to.
As he wandered through Stormwind, he eventually found himself, quite by accident, at the Cathedral of Light. There, he presented the letter from his father, the King of the Mines. The priests had never heard of such a title, but they read the letter carefully and, after some discussion, were about to direct him to the throne room when someone called out to him.
One of the dwarves from the tavern was there, still half-soaked in beer, praying to the Light for forgiveness. He spotted Carrot, hurried over to speak with the priests, and told them what had happened.
After hearing the dwarf's account, the priests offered Carrot a position and training with the Knights of the Silver Hand.
Carrot was delighted. He had no idea what the Silver Hand did, but it sounded important. Silver was valuable, after all, and a hand was a very useful thing to have.
Later that day, still looking for a place to stay, Carrot realized he didn't feel entirely comfortable in such a large city. He asked some guards for directions, and they pointed him towards the nearby village of Goldshire.
On the road, he was ambushed by bandits wearing red cloth over their faces. The men tried every dirty trick they could think of, but Carrot was simply too big and too strong for them.
One of the Defias kicked him between the legs.
The bandit immediately doubled over, howling in pain.
"That is my private-parts protector!" Carrot explained. "My father gave it to me. He said it would be useful!"
The bandits exchanged a look.
Whatever they had expected to find on the road that day, it had not been a man who explained his armor to them while they were trying to rob him.
They gave up and ran away.
In Goldshire, Carrot rented a room, unpacked his belongings, and did the first thing that came to mind: he wrote a letter to his parents back in Anvilmar.
"Dear Mum and Dad,
It is me, Carrot!
Stormwind is a strange city. I don't know if I'll ever get used to it, but I have good news! I've found a job! They're going to start training me tomorrow. They said I have the qualities they're looking for in a person. They're called the Knights of the Silver Hand, and it must be an important organization because silver is very valuable.
Anyway, thank you for the protector you insisted I wear. You were right. It has already proved useful!
I hope Minty is well.
Your loving son,
Carrot"
And so began the first of many letters Carrot would send to his proud parents in Anvilmar.
They read every one of them with great pride.
They had raised a good son.
And, as far as they were concerned, that was worth more than all the silver in Stormwind.
