Origins

The night elves, the kaldorei, are among the oldest peoples in Azeroth. Ten thousand years ago, the Well of Eternity, a font of magic that gave them eternal life, was the center of their world [WCIII].

That magic was also their downfall. The reckless use of it caught the attention of the Burning Legion, and the Legion came for the Well. To save the world, the Well was destroyed, and Kalimdor was torn apart in the Sundering [WCIII].

Not everyone let go. Illidan, hungry for the Well's power, stole some of its water and poured it into a pool on Mount Hyjal, making a new well. For that he was imprisoned beneath the mountain, and the dragon Aspects planted a tree over the new well to hold its power in. That tree is Nordrassil. The druids agreed to guard it and sleep in the Emerald Dream [WCIII].

For ten thousand years, the night elves stayed in their forests. Their sentinels guarded the woods, and the outside world mostly left them alone.
